Colorfully Altered X-Rays of Fantastical Digital Animals

The colorful mix of puzzling images depict what appear to be x-ray scans of different animals. Although, these are no ordinary x-rays. These are the kind of radiographs that make you question what you’re really looking at. Is that just a funny looking bird or a skeleton robot with a rifle for a beak? The collection of curious images display the artist’s wild imagination that goes far beyond cohesive comprehension....

Emotive Portraits of People Submerged Underwater

Looking through photographer Alban Grosdidier’s series, aptly titledDrowning, I found myself holding my breath. The collection of portraits give us all a taste of claustrophobia induced by the all-encompassing element of water. There’s an involuntary reaction to these images that forces the viewer to empathize with the submerged models. One can only take so much of it until they are overwhelmed by an invisible force. There’s a similar stress in both situations that is intangible....

Photorealistic Pencil Drawings of the Human Eye

What is it about thehuman eyethat is all at once mysterious and revealing? The years that have passed and those that are yet to come, the eyes truly tell indescribable tales. One such drawing is that of Mersmann’s late step-father who was 78 years old at the time. The artist reflects on the image, describing the eye as an eye akin to hammered gold. An eye that’s experienced prisoner of war camps and the death of many comrades....

Tokyo’s Modern Transparent House

One of these houses is not like the others. The building is unlike its neighboring houses in its appearance and structure. The interior of the residence has hardly any walls. Just about everything indoors is exposed to neighbors and passersby. The design appears to mimic a tree without outright copying its appearance. There’s also something about it that has the architectural feel of a bunk bed. I’m guessing it’s all the climbing without actually entering a new room....

Urs Fischer’s Dramatically Melting Sculptures

Even more intriguing was that an everyday man wearing glasses stood facing the sculpture. Like giant candles, both slowly burned to the ground, melting minute by minute. On Fischer’s website, you could find photos by Stefan Altenburger that show the amazing progression. By capturing this dramatic melting, Fischer makes us think about the inevitable passage of time. It will haunt me for a long time. It is a beautiful, funny, frightening emblem of time’s fatal arrow....

NASA’s Infrared Sky Comprised of 2.7 Million Images

The sky can be thought of as a sphere that surrounds us in three dimensions. To make a map of the sky, astronomers project it into two dimensions. In the mosaic, the Milky Way Galaxy runs horizontally across this map. Three of the four wavelengths surveyed by WISE were used to create this image. The colors used in this image represent specific wavelengths of infrared light. WISE observations have led to numerous discoveries, including the elusive, coolest class of stars....
